  Mice going on quests with epic villains like terrifying snakes and owls, this book is often shelved in children's sections but it's just as great high stakes adventure as anything you'd find for grown-ups. Also, the art is beautiful.

  Do you know the story of King Midas? Well, this story follows a space crew trying to find him because his dead body (which turns everything it touches to gold) is actually kind of an amazing superweapon. This is a funny one with a neat hook.

  This is not a funny one. The hook is that King Arthur is returning to 21st Century Britain in its time of greatest need. But that's actually probably a terrifying and horrible thing. This one has grim fey and blood magic.

• Seconds

  We could have chosen Scott Pilgrim here, but Seconds is about getting second chances to redo problematic choices you've made. It's more compact and less videogamey that Scott Pilgrim, but the fantastical premise and execution rock just as hard.

  This is a spinoff from Hellboy and is a pretty great examination of dealing with the aftermath and beyond of gigantic terrible supernatural disasters. Apocalypses just keep piling up and we follow the fantastical organization trying to help.
