Science Fiction & Fantasy Comics

Comics can do any kind of story well, but they do weird places and characters and monsters and aliens really well. The comics below are specifically non-superhero SF/F, because otherwise all those aliens and monsters from Marvel and DC could be elbowing these stories out of the way.

  • This epic science fiction adventure is about a kid born of parents who were on opposite sides of an interstaellar war. There are bounty hunters, a cat who can tell when someone is lying and a lot of adventure (and a lot of sex and drugs). The only…

Mice going on quests with epic villains like terrifying snakes and owls, this book is often shelved in children's sections but it's just as great high stakes adventure as anything you'd find for grown-ups. Also, the art is beautiful.

  • Do you know the story of King Midas? Well, this story follows a space crew trying to find him because his dead body (which turns everything it touches to gold) is actually kind of an amazing superweapon. This is a funny one with a neat hook.

  • The Witcher has been a book series and a streaming video series and also a comic series. Follow Geralt as he slays a bunch of monsters. (Sadly, Mike Mignola only did the covers, not all the interior art.)

  • Drome is a mythical story of creation, jealousy, betrayal and power. It's almost entirely wordless, but the panel composition alone is enough to make this thing amazing.
Graphic Novel, 2025New York : First Second, 2025. — LONE
  • We could have chosen Scott Pilgrim here, but Seconds is about getting second chances to redo problematic choices you've made. It's more compact and less videogamey that Scott Pilgrim, but the fantastical premise and execution rock just as hard.

  • This is a spinoff from Hellboy and is a pretty great examination of dealing with the aftermath and beyond of gigantic terrible supernatural disasters. Apocalypses just keep piling up and we follow the fantastical organization trying to help.

  • A time-travelling love story set around the miraculous properties of some weird plants. I love how Lemire's art which you usually associate with rural handmade aesthetics is put to use in a future where we often use smooth and shiny as a visual…
