Best Maisie Dobbs so far – this is my sixth book of the woman investigator set in World War I. After the disappointing “Leaving Everything Most Loved,” published 2013, I feared Maisie had retired for good. This 2016 book has the detective entering Germany in the late 1930s in pre-World War II as Hitler’s influence is being felt. She conveys the confusion felt by average Germans, the abuse rendered by Nazi leadership, and the bravery of those who dared challenge the overlords. Billy and Sandra are absent through much of this tale and it’s Maisie on her own. She assumes the role of the daughter of a Nazi prisoner to expedite his release.
