Set in the 1920s. Girl in China trys to immigrate to America. There is culture clash and issues with her being female. Beautifully written. Her father doesn't want to go and doesn't like her especially. However, no one is written as one dimensional. Even her father wants a good future for her in his own way, he just can't understand her. For example when asked why doesn't he want China to modernize, he says "So we can have deadlier armies? So our government can take land that does not belong to them? So we can force people to worship as we do? The things done in the name of modernization thing seem backward to me." Under current runs as to what is love. She wants to know the love that's in stories. However she does find love, but it is as it should be. Mostly good things and some bad things that you'll put up with. Her travel to America is real history with action and suspense. With characters you can connect to, this book will transport you into her life. (Also the cover, which is brilliant, will make sense about half thru page 175.)
