The book and more polished film differ in reasonable ways, but the core lessons of not judging by appearances and loyalty to friends are consistent. The book spends a lot of time describing how restrictively poor Wade is, so it has a harder time than the film making his rise to gunter fame believable but does give Wade's companions more credit. The challenges do differ but the car race found only in the film was cooler. Regardless, the author has done an impressive amount of '80s research and I can't help but feel nostalgic.
