I'm of two minds in reviewing this because I was of two minds reading it. ----- On one side was the experienced, critical adult reader who was thinking things like: - (Cringe) This dialogue is so hokey and unrealistic. These characters wouldn't think, talk, or react like this based on the settings and backgrounds that have been created for them. The dynamics of their interactions don't reflect real people in the least. - The character is baldly lying to us in his narration. If the surprise reveal that I'm expecting occurs (it did), then he is not only being cagey in his responses to the other characters, he's being false with us readers in ways the author doesn't seem to intend. - The surprise reveal is so obvious! ----- On the other side was the enthusiastic reader who was willing to suspend disbelief and criticism for a fun story. That part of me got caught up in the narration, was thrilled by the suspense, and cheered for the character(s). And it's the part I suspect is most like the average young reader who will engage with this book. ----- I can't say this was a perfectly told story for me, but I think it's one that will work for its intended audience quite well and I will recommend it with that thought in mind.
