People seem mad that they thought this was a comedy and it's not. Perhaps read a review or two first? "Young Adult" is from director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody, the team behind the inexplicably popular "Juno." Those expecting a similar film will be disappointed. As others have pointed out, this is not a happy film and the protagonist is difficult and rather unlikable, which appears to be a deal breaker for some viewers. Charlize Theron plays Mavis (an unlikely name), a beautiful writer who is also depressed, alcoholic, and possibly mentally ill. She returns to her sleepy hometown with the intention of winning back her high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson), who is happily married and has a new baby. She also strikes up an unlikely friendship with a former classmate, a nerdy cripple played by comedian Patton Oswalt. There are a number of improbabilities to deal with (like why is Theron so into Wilson, who is so boring) and it's an erratic film with zero visual style. But Theron, embracing the abrasiveness of her character, and Oswalt, who is equally unhappy, make the film work. It avoids "redemption" and "redeeming" qualities, but that's a strength for me. Clearly they didn't know how to end it. Give it a chance though. 90s music fans will appreciate the prominent use of Teenage Fanclub's "The Concept."
