Follow on to Zoo Station. It is Berlin, 1942 to 1945. British/American reporter, John Russell, and his German girlfriend, Effi, confront danger and deprivation daily as the Allies squeeze Nazi forces inward to the capital from the east, south and west. As the Reich folds, John’s reporting falls out of favor in the US and Britain so he does a deal with the devil, the Russians, in an attempt to get out of Germany. This entire book centers around John and Effi’s attempts to stay together even as John works through underground German communist sympathizers to obtain and deliver to the Russians the German scientific plans to build an A-Bomb. Many German communist partisans are caught, tortured and killed trying to get John and Efii to Sweden. Meanwhile, there is death and destruction throughout Berlin and John is very worried about the fate of friends and his long-separated German son, Paul, who is in the east fighting the Russian war machine's merciless advance. Good detail on Berlin at the end of the war. Suspenseful throughout.
