In the early twentieth century, a young girl living in a remote beach town wants to be a detective like her famous uncle. Her parents, managers of the grand hotel that is the area's main employer, would prefer for Suzanna to work in the tourism industry, like them. At first, Zanna's detective dreams seem unlikely to come to fruition, as not much exciting normally happens during routine-filled days in Loch Harbor, New Brunswick. This summer, though, a 7-year-old girl is kidnapped. Even Zanna's snooty Uncle Bruce, the investigator extraordinaire that the kidnapping victim's family hires from nearby Boston, has trouble solving the mystery. While Zanna wants to be taken seriously as she gathers clues, Uncle Bruce initially dismisses her attempts to help. This refusal to take her clue-finding skills seriously is reflected by the way he calls her Suzie, instead of the acceptable nickname of Zanna or even her real first name of Suzanna. As Zanna gains confidence throughout the course of the story, however, she convinces the people around her to listen to her investigative ideas. Aside from the central mystery, this book features a hidden fortune, false & true friends, and some cantankerous characters. A lighthearted beach read, this novel could be a good fit for both mystery & historical fiction lovers.
