"Newborn baby Frankie's mum is dying of cancer. Her father, Noel, doesn't know she exists and spends most of his days drinking. But when faced with taking custody, he agrees to give it a shot - prompting his neighbors in Dublin's St. Jarlath's Crescent to band together to get him sober and into a decent job (and to provide babysitting duties). With their help, and that of his visiting American cousin and his roommate, Noel fights to improve his situation and keep his daughter, despite the social worker's adamant desire to place Frankie in foster care. Author Maeve Binchy, who died in 2012, was known for well-wrought supporting casts and the small-town feel of the Irish cities they live in - two attributes very much on display here."
