It’s been six years since Jurassic Park, and Malcolm has been discovered to be alive after a scary near-death experience. The horrible events of Jurassic Park are thought to have been over and done with, the island destroyed. But now, there are reports of strange and unidentified animals attacking people and eating crops in South America. When Doctor Levine is able to see the animal he’s able to see it’s nothing we know of in this day and age but the animal is quickly destroyed and burned by the government. Levine traces back the animals back to a new island, Isla Sorna. He arrives only to find what he suspected is true, InGen has kept some animals hidden on this island and they’re still alive today… The Lost World is a sequel to Jurassic Park, taking place several years after the first book. It’s a good book but I have to say that I think it has a bit of a slow start and was therefore kind of hard to get invested in. I also felt it was a little forced at times, I believe the sequel was only written due to the popularity of the first book so it doesn’t flow like a proper sequel should. Like for example, Malcolm was understood to be dead at the end of the first book but in this one they just said he “was only slightly dead”(Crichton 1). Also there is the obvious fact that Isla Nublar was destroyed at the end of the first book so there had to be a new island which is a little odd. I think I’d recommend this book to people who have already read and enjoyed the first book, and even then it’s not perfect. If you didn’t really love the first book then this one’s definitely not for you, especially given the long and slow start before anything interesting happens. However, if you can get past the first 100 pages or so it should be more interesting and a more compelling read.
