A follow-up to the album that pushed Green Day into the mainstream, Insomniac has darker, more chaotic undertones that go a bit beyond teenage angst. Brain Stew is a classic, with lyrics like "A crooked spine, my senses dulled, past the point of delirium". I also love Geek Stink Breath; judging from the title, it's not a pretty song, but it's a quality track. The chaotic album artwork captures the essence of the album perfectly. If you compare this album cover with Dookie's, you can notice a difference; Dookie's cover is also disorderly, but the colors are lighter and give off a playful tone, while the darker colors on Insomniac are more sullen. Lead single Billie Joe Armstrong explained that this album kind of lashed out at some fans for calling them sellouts after the release of Dookie. Even though this album is kind of in between a couple of Green Day's more famous albums, old Green Day fans will love it and newer Green Day fans will enjoy as well.
