Can a working girl from Staten Island make it in the rich investment world of Manhattan? Good fun and frequent humor--Sigourney Weaver is an arrogant, deliciously evil villain--and also a good look at what women's career paths were like in the 1980s. Those horrible little bow ties; the big hair; the overt "sleep with me & you'll get a job" experiences (with a hilarious response from Melanie Griffith, who plays Tess). On a serious note, this film surfaces class levels in the U.S. While not as ossified as say, the U.K. or other cultures, it's there. Americans like to pretend it's not. :-) You wind up rooting for Tess as she carefully practices acquiring the right "voice" and attitude. Cleverly crafted ending...and who knew Twinkies from Harrison Ford (who plays the love interest of both women) could be such a romantic gift?
