In High Country, Anna Pigeon turns her hands to outright sleuthing. Still taking place in a National Park, this story finds Anna going undercover as a waitress (!!) in famous Yosemite Park’s fanciest lodge. Yosemite’s head ranger is worried that a serial killer is stalking the area, with four young people inexplicably vanished from the park. Anna has been brought in to replace one of them, a waitress. In some ways, I wonder whether this is an inevitable turn for Anna, since her continued closeness with death is becoming implausible even to her co-workers. Well-written and outright scary in parts, this story more creeps me out about Yosemite rather than making me want to visit. Similarly, our lovely Anna reveals hidden darkness as she fights for her life in the long climax of the story. As I pass my entry point to the Anna chronicles I wonder whether this should be the end of the tale – if going on too much longer will turn her into a Spenser for Hire or Nancy Drew trapped outside time.
