Sadie lives with her two children in London where she has her own bookbinding business. She is content with her work and her friends, though worried about her teenage son who has reacted badly to her ex-husband’s remarriage. She finds herself thinking of her own father and how she could not reconcile her feelings of resentment towards him or come to terms with the pain he caused her in her childhood. As she struggles with her memories, her relationship with her son deteriorates. The emotional tension that builds up over the course of the hot, dry summer is echoed in the riots in London’s East End and near tragedy for Sadie’s friends. When life settles down again Sadie realizes she has finally come to terms with her feelings for her father and she can now cherish his memory. These memories together with her close circle of friends and family form the foundation for her future happiness.
