The old Spanish proverb that introduces this novel-- Living well is the best revenge—is a necessary reassurance that all will be well eventually with Rose Lloyd. We come to know her personally through flashbacks to her childhood and first love affair that are interwoven with the narrative of her present life as a busy book editor and conscientious and loving wife and mother. When her husband Nathan leaves her for a younger woman who eventually takes her job as well, Rose’s anguish is heart-wrenchingly portrayed. The tables slowly turn and as Rose gains in confidence, we can almost feel sorry for Nathan as he comes to realise the value of the pattern of life that he has so unthinkingly destroyed. Women ‘of a certain age’ will appreciate the denouement of this novel—younger readers may feel that their generation is unsympathetically portrayed.
