The comments that this book is "poorly written" are poorly written. The book is written as if spoken from the point of view 17-year old. The complaints about the language, violence, and vulgarity overlook the fact that the Vietnam conflict was all those things. This book (and the glorification of war) should absolutely scare the sh*t out of everyone who reads it. If people would be as outraged about death and destruction as they are about profanity the world would be a safer, saner place. To quote School Library Journal: "This is a compelling, graphic, necessarily gruesome, and wholly plausible novel."

I was a freshman in high school when I first read this and I loved it. I enjoy reading it even more now that I am in college. Yes the language is on the vulgar side, but it's written from the perspective of a soldier, what do you expect? Yes it depicts bloody and sometimes terrifying scenes. Is that not what the Vietnam War was like? Did you want the author to sugarcoat things for your convenience? The characters in the book are well developed and it is written well. I fully recommend this book to anybody in high school because it most definitely opened up my mind about what war is really like.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, the language was on the vulgar side (it was written from a the point of view from a soldier during Vietnam after all), but it really adds to the atmosphere of the book. The writing was average, but the overall story was great, and it really makes you think about the horrors of war.

A poorly written book with tons of vulgarity, profanity and violence: definitely not a mix that should be available for the impressionable minds of the young, right? Yet, this book is widely available in the Children and Young Adult (i.e., kids under 18) departments of libraries! Despite all that, this book has NEVER been banned in the US, despite what some would like people to believe…

This is definitely not a book minor children should read without their parents’ consent, therefore should be in the Adult area of libraries. Besides, the literary value of this book is non-existent. (So banned = challenged? Yup, in the world of the Thinkpol, for sure!)

I have to agree with the other posters that this is a poorly written book. I could not finish reading it.
