Amazing and some of the actors seems mismatch for their roles. Matt middle age, seems stuck, unmotivated, finds himself and what life is to him in an odd way.

Oh my goodness. This was not at all what I expected should have read reviews first. This has to be one of Matt Damon's worst movies. The story line starts off fine but then just lost me. My husband and I stopped watching and cleaned the house instead. Not at all funny and just plain strange. Would not recommend u waste over an hour of your life on this film.

Great idea, bad movie.

It was rough - there was potential and it just fell short. Trailer is funnier than the movie itself.

A funny show on sustainability and lifestyle. What science might do to solve problems. Also the challenges people would face on deciding to change. This in the movie resulted in the couple splitting up and one of them only realizing it after they wake up from undergoing change. Then the man realizing what he missed from the life he left behind.

2 hours and 15 minutes of attempted comedy, attempted drama, attempted social commentary that was not very good at any of them and was a dull, confused, mostly boring mess.

Brilliant theme. Very poor execution. The movie loses its pace, direction and intent quite regularly. Matt Damon tries hard but I do wonder what's wrong with his script selection these days. Too long. Fails to grip your attention after the first 30 minutes.

pretty light weight

As other commentators note, DOWNSIZING is not a comedy. There are one or two laughs. It tells the story of a thoughtful occupational therapist, played by Matt Damon, who decides, along with his wife, to downsize -- a recent breakthrough technology pioneered by Norwegians researchers -- and go live in a planned community in the Southwest. This is a social commentary film that tries to make the medicine -- a critique of our hyper-capitalist consumer culture -- go down easy by packaging it as a light comedy. Matt Damon is excellent as the every-man sad sack, and the message at the end is pretty much unassailable, but overall I wouldn't consider this movie a success.

Horrible. Just don't.

Poor Hong Chau, she shines when allowed outside of the stereotypical "rude Viet girl" scenes.

And then of course, when we get to politics, Israelis shrinking Palestinians,
African dictators shrinking rival ethnic groups.
-Ron. Look, Ron. In any major transformation of society, are there serious growing pains?
In the 1950s, the institute identified over-population as mankind's single greatest long-term threat, the cause of all the catastrophes we are seeing today-- extreme climate and weather events, and the devastating impact on food and water security.

No offense, but um... do you think if you're that small you should still have all the same rights as the rest of us normal-sized people? I mean, like the right to vote?
-Why wouldn't we?
Oh, well, jeez, let's see, um... You don't buy as many products, you're not paying as much sales tax, and some of you aren't even paying any income tax. I mean, you're not really participating in our economy, are you?

The world has already seen five major extinctions, and now there will be another. I...I didn't want to believe it. None of us did, but there we were in Helsinki, big and small. Climatologists, bacteriologists, demographers, physicists, immunologists, 26 Nobel Prize winners among us. We built all the models, did all the math, and all conclusion was consistent. Homo Sapiens will soon vanish from the Earth. It is now an actuarial certainty. No matter how the end will come-- environmental disaster, pandemic disease, unbreathable air, impotable water, not enough food, nuclear winter, some combination of them all. Relatively soon the Earth will indeed purge itself of human life, and God knows how many other species.

Friends tell friends the truth. Okay, maybe sometimes I'm a little bit asshole, but the world needs assholes. Otherwise where would shit go out?
Equivalent value. You're solidly inside the Blue Chip zone. In Leisureland your $152,000 translates to $12.5 million-- to live on, for life.
When you know death comes soon, you look around things more close.
Oh, did you hear about all that gas being released in Antarctica? From the ice? The methane?
-Oh, I haven't really been following the news that much lately.
Apparently it's a big deal. Scientists are saying the more the ice melts, the more methane comes out making more ice melt.
I ask myself, Dusan, why the people they want to become small? To help the environment? Please. They become small to have the things which until now were only for the rich, which, by the way, is the genius of the concept.
