To many unanswered questions. Was she really selling her art for $5 a painting? Did she never talk to her daughter? If, she was famous, why did she not change her living situation?
A cute story but she had friends, , I think, , ,and no one stepped in to make her living situation better. Yes, she smoked. . . .but living in an "house" that between the "husband" and her attitude , , she died. The "husband" should have been jailed for neglect and/or spousal abuse.

Enjoyed this thoroughly, as I enjoyed her art when I saw it in Nova Scotia.

I loved this odd little love story. Two somewhat outcasts of society who are brought together by tough circumstances and they manage to craft an interesting life together. I thought their relationship was unusual and I love that the movie explored that. I was intrigued by the husband who was not that great a guy but she managed to bring out the best in him and towards the end I started to like him, warts and all.

This movie plods along like an old horse. However the story is excellent and so is the acting. They could have cut a half hour out of it and it would have been way better.

Great movie! Well acted. Loved all the Newfoundland scenery ( even though the story is based in Nova Scotia ).

Sally Hawkins did a great job portraying Maud Lewis. Ethan Hawke did a great job playing opposite her. Such a strange man. I hope she actually did soften him up in real life, as portrayed in the movie.

This movie is a Maud-lin abomination. The hack director (Aisling Walsh) plays fast and loose with the actual events in order to maximize the bathos.
I must say, the choice of Linklater lunkhead (Ethan Hawke) was true to form - wooden acting to the nth degree. There are bad actors in Canada - couldn't another be just as cruddy?
The no shame award goes to Michael Timmins for the irritating tinkly-poo soundtrack. Cowboy Junkies were a mildly interesting band in the 80's. It appears as if they are on mighty hard times as no one with any self worth would commit to this concoction.

Sally Hawkins is amazing actor. The sets are perfect, the supporting actors are great. Take the time to watch this film, it is worth it.

Sally Hawkins once again proves why she is the best actress in the industry right now. Brilliant performance.... moving, heartfelt, optimistic, incredibly sad, and beautiful. What a great story about a person many of us have not heard much about. Well deserved film, I wish more people saw it! Highly recommend
