Quiet, subtle, sometimes dismal, it is ultimately a love story. No action, little tension, very slow moving, but very, very sweet. It was a good movie.

I watch this movie once, and then I watch it a second time. I was fabulous. She was such a strong woman and role model. It is a must see. Highly recommended by me.

PERFECT. Sally Hawkins is perfect as Maude Lewis and inhabits the character as wholly as I have ever seen any actress ever do, even among the greats. Ethan Hawke is also perfect as Everett Lewis - they both brought me to tears often. We laughed with them and we cried with them and he made me hate him more than once - a couple of times I could have killed him! My response to this movie was visceral and I was so moved by their portrayals of the central characters that it kept me awake. Supporting characters were good as well and it was nice to see Zachary Bennett, an old friend from Road to Avonlea, again.
Run, do not walk, to see this thoughtful, sensitive, Canadian film. No CGI, no explosions or car chases though: just dirt poor, simple, everyday people living their lives during a very hard time in history. Maybe the best Canadian film I have ever seen.

This may not be for everyone, so Hollywood block-buster fans beware, no CG special effects here- this is real film at its finest.

A true Canadian story of an oppressed lovely woman and her quest to survive. Heart breaking, hopeful and beautiful if you don't fall in love with Maudie and this film check your pulse.

Ethan Hawke was AMAZING as was Sally Hawkins, who you don't even think isn't Maudie for a minute. I am a fan.

This is not a film about art or painting.

This is not a film about Canada or (supposedly) Nova Scotia--although it was shot close by, in Newfoundland, possibly because the settings resembling 1930s-1960s Nova Scotia still more readily available there (but oh, boy, were Nova Scotians upset!).

Instead, this is a story of human interaction between two misfits: Maudie, a physical cripple, and Everett, an emotional cripple. It's as simple as that--yet it's the simplicity that fascinates us.

The two actors, the more seasoned American screen star, Ethan Hawke and British 21st century screen actress Sally Hawkins deserve praise--Hawkins just earned her second Oscar nomination for her work here--for not so much for performing these roles as actually inhabiting the characters they represent. Amazing work.

However, the individual who made their work possible is almost-unknown Irish director, Aisling Walsh, who has only made a handful of feature films. Great sensitivity from a woman who, evidently, was originally attracted to the story by her own love of painting, and who obviously realized that this tale isn't really about "painting" at all...

I always hesitate to watch non-fiction, especially when its a 'based on' show. It either is too real or too much!
Having said that, I loved this movie. All those things that they say are true, "I laughed, I cried, etc. etc."....
There is nothing hidden or kept back, and you will want to know more about them both. The truth is almost stranger than the movie!
