A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the Ưworldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation-and triumph over it-ever written.

The voice of the narrator is great: not to refined and smooth, very deep, and he selects and enunciates emotions consistent with the text very well. The work itself is an apology for Catholicism, and a few other things he can squeeze in (elitism, private schooling, etc.). But even so, many of the arguments or point made can stand on their own and can be reasonably incorporated into most any plausible system of ideas. The high values and a touch of pragmatism are something anyone can benefit from.

Generally I love British accents in audiobooks, but this narrator's sometimes gravelly voice, while evoking an appropriate wizened image, was hard to understand, especially when speaking in hushed tones. I plan to read the print book which will offer time to pause and contemplate Wormwood's advice to his student.

C.S. Lewis at the top of his game. If you ain't scared of the devil yet, you will be. (& recognize some friends and acquaintances along the way.)
