From Newbery Honoree Carl Hiaasen comes this New York Times bestseller set in Florida's Everglades in which an eccentric eco-avenger, a stuffed rat named Chelsea, a wannabe Texas oilman, a singing substitute teacher, and a ticked-off panther can't stop two kids on a mission to find their missing teacher!

Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, is missing. She disappeared after a school field trip to Black Vine Swamp. And, to be honest, the kids in her class are relieved.

But when the principal tries to tell the students that Mrs. Starch has been called away on a "family emergency," Nick and Marta just don't buy it. No, they figure the class delinquent, Smoke, has something to do with her disappearance.

And he does! But not in the way they think. There's a lot more going on in Black Vine Swamp than any one player in this twisted tale can see. It's all about to hit the fan, and when it does, the bad guys better scat.

"Ingenious . . . Scat won't disappoint Hiaasenphiles of any age." -- The New York Times

"Woohoo! It's time for another trip to Florida--screwy, gorgeous Florida, with its swamps and scammers and strange creatures (two- and four-legged). Our guide, of course, is Carl Hiaasen."

After spending a couple days reading this strange yet entertaining book, I was actually capable of learning dozens of interesting facts about panthers (which will be totally useful if I ever come across one! :) And if I were to be fully honest, the only reason this book is missing a star is just because at some points through the book, it does get quite boring. I'll admit it, I did skip a couple pages, but other than that tiny issue the book is congenial!

Thanks for reading ;)

I liked the part when Smoke chomped on Mrs. Starch's pencil and she told Smoke to write a 500 word essay about pimples!

This book was about an investigation of an arson. There are a lot of clues to solve the mystery of who set the forest fire. Along with the arson investigation is the concern for the endangered panthers! My favourite part was when they found the Momma Panther. My favourite character was Nick's dad because he is an inspiration. He is inspiring because he had his arm blown off and he is still positive.

This is my favourite book because it is a mystery and it's funny. I also like all of Carl Hiaasan's other books.

CecyB, you are INSANE! This book is AMAZING! I am a girl who loves books about looking after the enviroment, and this book hits that right on the spot! I have watched the movie Hoot, but have not read the book, I want to, but my movie watching experience was interupted by many, "Aww!"s and,"So cute!"s from me and my mom. Lol. Thank you, Carl Hiaasen! Best enviroment books ever!
