Budding naturalists will dig this picture book with its intriguing pulp paintings and simple rhyming text.

After we pulled some carrots out of the ground (garden), thus learning what a root is (and of course we ate those roots), peered into a few snake holes, and watched a frog jump into the pond, we read Underground together - over and over again. We kept learning about more and more things that are going on under our feet! There's a whole world of activity under the ground that we seldom pause to think about. It all comes alive with this book!

"Underground/creatures dig...past squirm-ways and worm-ways..." A minimal but powerful text & intimate, close-up illustrations follow moles, chipmunks, grubs, earthworms, and other creatures that spend their time underground.

"Across pages that "hum with life and activity" (Horn Book), Denise Fleming's trademark nubbly textured, paper-pulp illustrations show how much is happening deep in the dirt of a typical suburban backyard. They reveal what insects and a whole host of other animals (such as rabbits, turtles, dogs, frogs, and woodchucks) are up to underground, and a key to all the animals included in the illustrations appears in the back of the book for kids who want to take a second (or third, or fourth) look. Paired with Kate Messner's similar book Over and Under the Snow, Underground is sure to get children thinking about what they don't usually see."
