In 1998, lonely New Yorker Winthrop is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward VIII's abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Winthrop's research reveals that the couple's life together was not as perfect as she thought.

Missed opportunity to tell us more about Edward and Wallis Windsor. Instead, the focus was on a mentally disturbed character who was obsessed (just because she was named after?) Wallis. Also glossed over was the Nazi sympathizer angle, because, after all, this is a LOVE story and we're not supposed to think about that. And the fictional modern character--she had to be rescued from her abusive relationship so we could "enjoy" the parallel love story. Blah.

I thought I would cringe through this, due to all the critics reviews. But, I actually enjoyed this film ! Very well made. Andrea Riseborough's performance was very entertaining.

I enjoyed this movie, I didn't care for the modern day parallel story and thought the movie could just have been the historical story which I did enjoy. The fact that Madonna directed this movie will have no bearing on you enjoying or disliking this movie.

wow...I can't believe all the negative comments and Madonna-bashing. I found it a very interesting and entertaining movie with a hopeful ending. I don't know anything about the history of this couple and don't care which probably enabled me to enjoy this visually rich and engaging movie. Very well acted.

The best thing about Madonna's directorial debut, W./E. is the Oscar-nominated costumes. Andrea Riesborough looks absolutely gorgeous throughout as Wallis Simpson, but what should be an intriguiging plot feels bogged down by its own inflated self-importance. The present-day storyline with Abbie Cornish is laborious and not fully-developed. Madonna definitely has a great eye for style and shots, but I hope her next effort has a little more real substance.

This film didn't hold my attention, which I was surprised at because I love a good love story. Something was missing though, something to make me care about this love affair between Wallis Simpson and King Edward. And this "something" never came around because I didn't feel anything, good or bad, when he abdicated the throne for her. Perhaps it would have been a better film if the current story about Wally (Abbie Cornish's character) weren't trying to be woven in with that of the old love affair between Wallis and Edward. Again, I didn't care about the story involving Abbie Cornish's character. She was a privileged house wife with no life other than to go to Sotheby's everyday and look at artifacts from the great love affair between Wallis and Edward. I didn't understand why she married and left a job for a man who beats her, but miraculously has the courage to leave him one day. Her story bored me. The movie bored me and I wanted to turn it off, but I also wanted to see how it ended, to see if I didn't just waste 2 hours of my life watching this movie. The only thing I can say is that I liked the actress who played Wallis Simpson, Andrea Riseborough. She was good. I wanted to like the movie, but it just didn't do it for me.

Thought this movie was OK. Not as bad as I thought that it might be with the less than favourable reviews. Liked the original Wallis story not so much the dual Wallis story part which was kind of lame.
