Heart-breaking, beautiful, and poignant, War Horse manages to convey suffering, sadness, heroism, courage, and innocence in one wonderful experience. Told through the eyes of a horse, characters are judged throughout by their actions rather than by whether they wear a uniform or what color it is. The movie avoids being political or explicitly anti-war, instead depicting candidly but with restraint the human dramas of WWI. It is certainly an emotional ride, but not fluffy or lightweight. Overall, it is bitter-sweet, and I definitely recommend it for anyone over the age of 10 or so (there are scenes of non-graphic but intense war violence, peril, and harrowing suffering of animals).

And there's Tom Hiddleston. And Benedict Cumberbatch. And a beautiful horse. Check, check, check. All bases covered.

Another masterpiece from Steven Spielberg,as great as Empire of the Sun & Saving Private Ryan.

Loved this movie, very well acted and directed. I agree that is probably not for young children as there are scenes where tissues required and some of the 'realities' of early war portrayed. It is sad, with a few amusing scenes, war is never nice and I am grateful for our heroes, two- and four- legged (canines also).

God, I love this movie; turns out I love all the horse movies: Seabiscuit, the little horse, and Secretariat, the big horse with a heart five times normal size. Too bad the latest great horse is owned by a stinking camel shagger.

I loved this movie. I recommend for adults. It is too violent for children. I love animals. It was difficult to watch the horrific experiences this poor horse had. I felt sad for the horse and the man who loved the horse. It is an emotional movie. You will likely need the tissue handy for the teary moments. I did!

This is a 2011 American-British war drama directed by Steven Spielberg, based on Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel of the same name set before and during World War I.
Altough you need a willing suspension of disbelief, it is an emotional, heart-breaking yet heart-warming-at-end story about mutual trust and friendship between a horse and a man.

I read the book about a month or two ago and decided to watch the movie once I found out that it existed. I wasn't expecting much, but was surprised to find out that it was ultimately like the book! I would totally recommend this movie; especially if you are a fan of the book.

Beautiful movie. That's the best way I can describe it. Superb cast!! Best movie ever made. It's the sort of movie that becomes part of you, not just one that you watch once and forget about. Tear-jerker:) Sad, sweet, beautiful.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Numerous potentially upsetting scenes. Horses face neglect and succumb to exhaustion. Sympathetic characters die (offscreen, but emotional). A family has fights and a young man places himself between his horse and a gun.

sergeants talking:
1st guy:"What do you think of my new cap? Silk lining, I quite like it."

2nd guy:"I'm not sure it will make a lot of difference to the Germans."

1st:"Oh, I don't know about that, think about it. If your a Bosch and you have to choose which two caps you have to choose and you thought, Good lord, one of them is really wearing a very styish cap indeed. I think I am going to shoot the other one instead."

2nd""Or he might relatively think, I fancy that cap, I'm going to kill you first of all."

1st:"Hadn't really thought of that."

(Joey has just been freed from being ensnared in barbed wire in No-Man's Land, by both a British and a German soldier, during a mini-truce) British soldier: "Look at that horse! Look at the muscles he's got! Them long legs! They're made for runnin', horses. Runnin' away from danger." German soldier: "Running away's all they have." British soldier: "And yet, we taught them opposite... Runnin' into the frey..." German soldier: "War horse." British soldier: "...War horse..."
