In the small Sicilian town of Baaria in the province of Palermo, a family saga spans three generations. During the Fascist period, simple shepherd Peppino Cicco leaves to indulge in his passions: books, epic poems, and the great popular novels of love. His son witnesses the famine and injustices perpetrated during the Second World War. Following the war, he meets the woman of his life. But Peppino became Communist and opposes their union.
