Lily Alone, is an amazing read. It centers around the life of Lily and her three little siblings. Lily is only 11, but she is used to looking after her siblings. She often puts them to bed when her mom is out late. When her mom leaves on a vacation with a new boyfriend, she tells the kids that Mikey (the twins dad) will come, Lily is unsure. When he phones the house telling Lily he can't leave and to put her mom, who has already left for her vacation, Lily hesitates. She is certain if she tells Mikey her mom has left he will come. But she is upset at the way he treats the kids. In a bad mood he could frighten them all, and he was too rough. From Lily Alone,"One minute he'd be laughing and tossing the kids up in the air, then one of them would splutter something silly or kick him accidentally, and his face would darken and he'd shout and smack." So Lily lies to Mikey and tells him she will tell her mom not to leave, and now she is stuck playing mom. Times are rough and Lily struggles, to keep the kids happy and safe until mom returns. Only mom never said an exact date, so when will she return. Hopeully soon, and hopefully the fact that they are home alone will go unseen.

Lily is eleven years old, and lives with her mum and siblings, Bliss, Baxter and Pixie. One day her mum is invited to Spain for a holiday by her new boyfriend Gordon, and accepts, leaving the four children home alone. Lily tries her best to care for her brother and sisters, feeding them whatever is in the cupboard- in other words, ice cream, biscuits and more ice cream. It isn’t long until someone finds out that they are alone and not at school, and Lily and her siblings have to escape to the park, where they sleep in a hollow tree. At one point they can’t find their tree, and have to eat scraps from a cafe until they find it again. Just when Lily does have things under control, an accident occurs, and soon, everyone knows…

One thing that I didn’t like about this book is the mother. Before she leaves for Spain, she takes the children on a shopping trip, and she uses a credit card that she doesn’t own. And when she does return, she goes to court, and the children think that she hasn’t done anything wrong. I did enjoy the dialogue, and the way that the author makes the characters come alive. My favourite character is Lily, because she is so sensible

" 'You'll look after us. You're great at looking after us. Better than Mum,' said Bliss. 'I'm sick of being the mum.' "
