Director Andrea Arnold has a way of making you think you are spying on real-life people. Mia (Katie Jarvis) is an angry 15-year-old living in the projects (council housing) in working class Essex, England. She likes to dance, but she doesn't appear to like anything else, least of all her mother (Kierston Wareing) and the feelings seem mutual. Her mother asks angrily, "What's wrong with you?" Mia, responds angrily as she takes off toward her room, "You're what's wrong with me!" Then she meets Conner. He is a charming, handsome man (Michael Fassbender) new in her mother's life. He is the only one who shows her any kindness. But does Mia misread his true feelings? When something happens and he tells her, "We have to keep this between you and me," you know things won't end well between them. A scene toward the end hints that there may be hope for Mia's relationship with her mother and sister. Jarvis, a teenager during the making of the film, throws herself into the role completely. The camera is on her most of the time and she really delivers a knockout performance.

Well done. Very good portrayal of a dysfunctional family the director wasn't ashamed to show near poverty and the nitty gritty of real life. Not a kid's film!

poignant. "Life's a bitch and then you die. That's why we get high." Acting's great. Directing's great. Story is so grim that at one point we turned it off. Next day we finished it and was glad we did. Regional white ghetto accents are pretty thick. you won't be able to understand some dialog.

This moving film follows a young woman navigating young adulthood in impoverished town in England. We don't see enough women directors, and so it's great to see Andrea Arnold dramatize this young girl's life in such an arresting and heartbreaking way. The actress is also fantastic.

Gritty, uncompromising (and sometimes unbearable) British film about a teenage girl with an alcoholic single mother. Things get more complicated with the mother's new boyfriend (A charming, if dangerous, Michael Fassbender), who takes an interest in her. It belong to the kitchen sink/working class school of English filmmaking (Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, Alan Clarke), but with its focus on a female protagonist, feels fresh. You can decide for yourself if the ending is hopeful or not.

This is a sad movie of an inner city England girl. It’s well done but very true to life. Not an uplifting movie at all. Also, the English sland is very hard to hear at times and without any subtitles makes it very hard at times to follow. A good movie, but don’t expect any rainbows or lollipops from this one.

A listless adolescent girl was trapped in the fate being raised by a socially defeated single mom ... it was so sad that the girls appeared to have never had an outing to a nearby small lake! Nothing to cheer about the circumstances of the characters and suspect that was the movie's intent. See janice21383' s perfect comment.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

I loved the acting so much but I found the storyline moved quite slowly.
