Two-Way Street by Lauren Barnholdt was originally published June 2007 by Simon Pulse.
The story follows the up and down relationship of Jordan and Courtney who have recently graduated from high school and have both decided to go to Boston University. They make a plan to drive up together, but things get tricky when Jordan breaks up with Courtney shortly before they are supposed to leave. Courtney’s parents decide that she has to take the trip with him anyway and so goes the story.
I liked that we got the story from both Jordan and Courtney’s point of view, and that the author used both past and the present throughout the chapters so that we get the entire story. I found that the book was just ok. I thought it was predictable and outdated (way too much MySpace and other old pop-culture references, but then again it was published in 2007). I knew what was going to happen from the get go, and nothing surprised me. It also felt like the author was getting sponsorship from Burger King she mentioned it so much. The cover doesn’t really have anything to do with the story because it’s not like they break down and they did not drive a convertible. I actually related somewhat to Courtney because I would definitely be the one who has the itinerary planned out and wouldn’t want to deviate from the schedule, but she was a little too uptight and annoying. It just didn’t feel like the characters were genuine. I found myself longing to be finished of the book and thinking of all the other books I could be reading instead, so I wouldn’t recommend this book. If anything I would say rent it from the library, but don’t go out and buy it.
• Where they drove: From Florida through North Carolina to Boston University
• What they drove: Jordan’s Trailblazer
• What they listened to: Jordan’s Gangsta mix (Hardcore rap) and Courtney’s country mix including Dixie Chicks.
