Lincoln dearly loved his four sons and tried hard to keep his family united and happy, but sickness, loss, and Lincoln’s travels created family tensions that were overwhelming. Illus. with period photographs and engravings.
This is a quick, easy read and is enlightening for anyone (like me) who only ever remembers learning about Tad Lincoln in school - never Robert, Eddy or Willie. Holzer is a reknowned Lincoln scholar so while I trust that he knows what he's talking about, I was disappointed that his source notes generally refer to secondary sources rather than primary documents. Plenty of photographs of the Lincolns are included - including one of Tad that the little scamp altered with a phony mustache.
