Where there's smoke there's fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.

Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie's name is on the killer's list.

Short on time to find evidence proving the killer's identity, Stephanie faces further complications when her family and friends decide that it's time for her to choose between her longtime off-again-on-again boyfriend, Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert Ranger. Stephanie's mom is encouraging Stephanie to dump them both and choose a former high school football star who's just returned to town. Stephanie's sidekick, Lula, is encouraging Stephanie to have a red-hot boudoir "bake-off." And Grandma Bella, Morelli's old-world grandmother, is encouraging Stephanie to move to a new state when she puts "the eye" on Stephanie.

With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie's life looks like it's about to go up in smoke.

PLOT OR PREMISE:
Bodies are popping up on the construction lot for the new bonds office, and somehow it all connects to Stephanie.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
While figuring out who is using the site as a body farm, they also get to arrest an old vampire, deal with a culinary matchmaking option, a bear, and Stephanie's libido in overdrive.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
Yet again, the premise is that creepy stalker dudes are amusing. And a solution that relies on the killer revealing all.
.
DISCLOSURE:
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor do I follow her on social media.

I know the Stephanie Plum series is not highbrow reading, but I love having these books in my reading repertoire. Though some might dispute this, I do see growth in Stephanie and her relationships with her two love interests and with the supporting characters we see pop in and out. Some like Connie and Lulu and Grandma Mazur always get in on the action. Others like Mooner are in some books, but not in others. Joe's grandma was prominent in this particular installment and gives Stephanie "the vordo" which leads to some hilarious consequences.

Since I started reading them late in the game, I have the luxury of binge-reading rather than having to wait for the next episode to be published. It will be a bit sad when I reach that point where I am all caught up.

I laugh out loud when I read this series.

Evanovich painfully prolongs this series by rehashing a very soap opera style formula of more fluff than substance. Sadly her recurring characters, who seem stuck in a time warp, are boring and predictable.

Hot sex in this one, after Stephanie gets "the eye" from Morelli's Grandma Bella.

Stephanie is back and as with most books in this series, she is still torn between Morelli and Ranger. Still riding around the Burg with Lulu trying to catch the D grade perps as a bounty hunter. Still driving her Grandma Mazur to viewings at the funeral parlour. Still in the same place she was in book two. There has been very little growth in her or any of the other characters over fifteen books.

And while I enjoy these books like I enjoy my comfy old sweats, I want Stephanie to grow and change. At least get better as a bounty hunter. Still have the crazy perps that only her cousin Vinnie would bailout, but have her be better at taking them down. This might require Evanovich have to create more crazy perps and felons, but it would make for a better book.

Only for the Evanovich fan.

I really think Evanovitch should move on -- this story line is so old and tired it's not even fun any more. I got halfway thru and gave up. I won't be reading the next one.

Stephanie needs to make a choice: Morelli or Ranger - this plot device is wearing a bit thin. This 17th installment of the numerical Trenton-based series features the usual cast of odd-ball characters, including crazy "FTAs"; as well as the predictable food binges/fights; visits to the funeral parlor, and destroyed cars. I think Evanovich would be wise to wrap this all up by the 20th novel.

Much better plot than her last novel. As usually Lula and Grandma Mazur are hilarious. The love triangle with Stephanie, Ranger and Morelli is getting a bit old. I wish she would just pick one and move on with that story line.
