Great book!! Could not put it down. It really challenges the ethics of the characters and the reader when your faced with the choice of killing your friends in order to survive. So many great characters met a gruesome end.

I loved it!!! Like the hunger games on steroids

I rate this a 4/5 based on the execution of the story but it is definitely a controversial read. Young people being subjected to such violence, it is a very scary thing to imagine.

A japanese mash-up of "lord of the flies" and "hunger games." Too many characters are introduced too quickly, but since they die so soon, you figure out pretty quickly which ones you should pay attention to.
It is a very engrossing read, but quite violent.

i like everything about the description, except the fact that they said "a 21st centry lord of the flies." im reading lord of the flies now as part of my english course. No BR does not resemble Lord of the flies in any way. Maybe b/c there's no original ideas anymore D:

"Battle Royale" is a very exciting book. While the premise is not a good thing, the book is very good. It is a page-turner until the very end and is hard to put down. There aren't any characters one knows absolutely nothing about, and it's a very good story.

Absolutely incredible. This book is unbelievably gripping, and you really grow to love the characters. The twists are quite wrenching, and the story flows beautifully. I would read this book again and again. Definitely one of my favorites.
Note that there is quite a lot of violence, as well as mature themes.

Read this novel back when i was in high school, made it a quest to find the movie. Which back then was impossible due to it being restricted, the world that this novel plunged me into made Lord of the Flies look like a walk in the park.

The original Hunger Games??? Very similar story. My daughter got me hooked on the Hunger Games and we can't wait to see the upcoming movie but I also loved this book, Battle Royale. It did take me a while to warm up to it and I put it down twice, deciding it wasn't worth it. So if you can get past the into, prologue and the first chapter, it is a good read. Looking to find the movie that is supposed to be based on this book.

I'm not giving this book 4/5 stars because it is the most eloquent book ever written, but because it completely sets out to do what it wants to do.

The whole plot is reminicent of the Hunger Games, but I think it hits all the places the Hunger Games missed. Battle Royals is much more real, much more gritty. The characters are unique and all react differently to the events.

This is a book you want to keep reading. I found myself going, "Okay, the next death I'll put it down. After the next one." Which, you know, pretty much failed by the end, when I got so excited that I actually couldn't sleep. At times it's disturbing, and for most of it, it has your pulse racing.

A word of advice: write out the character list on a blank piece of paper and record character traits when they are mentioned. Use it as a bookmark. As people die, cross them off. Believe me, it will help immensely. You won't sit there stumped about who someone is when they reappear 200 pages later after being mentioned once.

Overall, I loved it. The characters were real and relatable (and not annoying, a major plus). Just when you feel like it's getting predictable, the author hits you with something new. A must read for any action/adventure fan.
