One star for Colin Firth/Genoa/Keener. Not Winterbottom's finest hour.

Very disappointing movie. Colin Firth was good, but he could not save this movie. Would not recommend.

Disappointing with intense but unrealistic characters meandering about.

Genoa looks good.

Good travel escape movie. The images of Genoa were lovely to see but the plot was weak.

The wonderful Colin Firth is wasted in this film, which could have been better. Haunting and touching subject matter, not played out well, but with a lovely and restrained musical score. Too bad.

memorable and touching - this little slice of life is visually interesting and emotionally engaging. I felt that I was lost in Italy, too. The girls really drew me into their new world. Colin Firth is real. ending was weak.

closed-captions and/or subtitles: There are no closed-captions but sub-titles are available as a choice for English language use. The SDH [subtitles for the deaf & hearing impaired] titles are very good: Large, enhanced-yellow letters over a black background; very sharp & crisp, easy-to-read. There is intermittent Italian language spoken by Italian characters in the movie: this dialogue has tiny, fuzzy/ blurry white letters (obviously made for movie theater distribution in English language speaking countries). Unless one has a very large computer screen or tv screen/dvd player screen to watch the movie on the Italian language titles will be very hard to read: try opera glasses, binoculars or sitting two feet from your tv/dvd player's screen.

The movie itself was overwhelmingly a downer: Depressed and depressing characters w/ undeveloped roles barely met by the script. The producer & director could have used another screenwriter to review & make changes. The older daughter's character was nasty; her use of foul language came across as gratuitous. It would've bee nice had the script provided a background story as to why an Englishman was living w/ and married to an American woman in Chicago... this could've been easily accomplished in several words, such as a story line that he & his late wife had met in college, or England or wherever (as the Firth character was obviously not American by background).

I expected way more from this movie. Slow and quite predictable. Nothing new.

As an ex-pat Brit, I can tell you that this "film" is a common example of the sort of drivel that British TV and the British Arts Community try to pretend is "Artsy" and introspective. In fact, this movie is a poorly executed portrayal of an undeveloped story about a "slice of life" that is full of escapism AND devoid of humour: VERY British!.
