A series of seemingly random murders along a fifty-mile stretch of the rugged northern California coast, committed by an unknown dubbed by the media the Coastline Killer. A young couple with marital problems, Shelby and Jay Macklin, who decide to spend the week between Christmas and New Year's at a friend's remote coastal cottage. Two couples in a neighboring home whose relationships are thick with festering menace. A fierce winter storm that leads to a night of unrelenting terror. These are the main ingredients in Bill Pronzini's chilling and twist-filled tale about the hidden nature of crime and its motives.

Well! What an awful piece of amateurish slice of crap! I've read about a dozen of his novels ( some good, some pretty bad), but this one is almost as if you found yourself in a midday soap opera, one of the crappier one. What the hell was is on when he was writing this? From the start this story sucks. You get bad marriage, nightmares, weekend get away, BIG storm, a killer on the rampage, not neighbourly neighbours, drunks, bad marriage (again), domestic violence, BIG tree blocking the road, wild chase in the darkness, neighbour knocking at your door with a punched face, a mysterious sheriff, a hearth attack ( "my life is finished. I'm now an invalid" ), a hero saving the day and getting the bad guy, a few "frights" at the hospital, and an almost happy ending. Geez! I consider myself a not so good "writer", but I think I could have written something like this. And again it would have been a piece of crap. But for an "author" to write such swill and get away with it is beyond me. "Another Pronzini anyone? I think not". He should burn his computer and change carrier.
