Between the living and the dead is the Order of the Deacons, protectors of the Empire, guardians against possession, sentinels enlisted to ward off malevolent hauntings by the geists . . . Among the most powerful of the Order is Sorcha Faris, now thrust into a partnership with the novice Deacon Merrick Chambers. They have been dispatched to the isolated village of Ulrich to aid a Priory besieged by a surge of violent geist activity. With them is Raed Roosin, Pretender to the throne that Sorcha is sworn to protect, and bearer of a terrible curse. But what greets them in the strange settlement is something far more predatory and more horrifying than any mere haunting. And as she uncovers a tradition of twisted rituals passed down through the dark reaches of history, Sorcha will be forced to reconsider everything she thinks she knows. Even is she makes it out of Ulrich alive, what in the hell is she returning to. 'An incredibly rich story . . . rich in high action, rich in mystery, rich in characters, rich in ghosts. Absolutely not to be missed.' Barb Hendee, coauthor of the Noble Dead sage

It did take awhile for this to really grab my attention, but I thoroughly enjoyed it by the end of the book.

It is one of those books where you might feel like you came into the story partway through. But if you can get through that, it picks up. :)

While a little more of an urban fantasy than I usually read, I liked the active defensive magic system and the partner characters.

I really liked this book, I feel Philippa Ballantine did a great job on designing her main characters and storyline.

If you're really into steampunk/supernatural/adventure/romance than I suggest you read it.

You might find it slow paced at first but that's because she is building it from the different views of her characters, explaining their insight.

I know I can't wait to read the second installment, it really painted a vivid picture in my mind. Smoking and all - coming from a non smoker. haha

I’m not sure why I didn’t love this book – there’s a fresh, original fantasy adventure. There’s a strong female protagonist and a wily sidekick, and even a seductive, mysterious adventurer. Somehow, though, I never got as far into it as I wanted to. I have a sneaking suspicion that it had to do with the cigars.

This might be a good book if you can get through the first few boring chapters which I was not able to force my way through...

A very interesting book, but a little slow to start - got much better once all the characters became a group. I will be interested in seeing what the next book is like.
