Wow! Was I disappointed in this one. Eva Ibbotson is my favorite children's writer -- and this one reads like a quick rough draft playing with or getting ready for (or rehashing) Island of the Aunts. My guess is that it was not Eva Ibbotson's idea to publish this, but somoeone else's after her death (or at least that's what I am telling myself.)
