England between the wars is the starting place for this epic tale of love, friendship and the discovery of womanhood. Judith Dunbar is left behind at boarding school by her parents and sister, who are posted overseas in the days leading up to World War II. She comes of age in a time of turbulence and danger, but finds comfort in the wealthy Carey-Lewis family, whose estate on the Cornish coast, Nancherrow, becomes her surrogate home.

Predictable. Utterly unsurprising romance; impossibly rich Brits have troubles in wartime. But at the end, they're still impossibly rich.

Rated 10/10. Wonderful show. Terrific acting.

This movie is a sad disappointment. If you loved the book don't bother. The story is changed so radically as to be unrecognizable. The names of the characters are changed, the story is changed, and even Joanna Lumley can't save it.

I was quite disappointed with this movie. First, it is too slow. But the biggest problem is the substitution of a delightful adolescent Keira Knightley by the maladroit and ugly Emily Mortimer! From then on, the movie lost its heart. Mortimer is always squirming, squeezing her eyes when she smiles (did she really think it was cute?), raising eyebrows with a puerile look on her face she meant to be naïve… She is first deeply in love with one character; later on, when he finally proposes to her, she’s no longer in love… When a character commits suicide someone deems this most selfish of acts to be brave! Another important character gets the news of the suicide without a reaction! I watched just a bit of the second disc and couldn’t go further.

Sexual Content: An older man tries to abuse a 14 year-old girl, quite disturbing.
