Gennadara and Danrith are surrounded by danger. They go out only in daylight, and have an uneasy truce with the creatures who come out after dark. All are ruled by Letrin, an arrogant and powerful being. Genna and Dan's father is thought to be dead, and the children are terrified of their Uncle Banris, who conspires to marry their ill mother. When the siblings sneak out at night to cure their mother, they are catapulted into wild adventures.

Fourteen-year-old Gennadara Yihannisdattar and her brother Dan are forced to find a mysterious person named Doyati for a Letrin, the king of an inhuman, faerie-like species called the nightlings, in exchange for the lives of her people and an ornament called the Ruby Key. Along with Dan and Genna are Yarri, a nightling slave girl who wishes to be freed from Letrin, a cynical talking cat, and an elderly woman called the audiomaerist. They settings consist of "our world" as well as "nightworlds", realms that are dark and violent and that have targeted Genna.
