This book is a little too wordy, but probably young tricksters-in-training will love it. I liked the art and the ending, where the mouse is revealed to be more than just a clever, Bugs Bunny/Anansi/Scheherazade type of trickster, but a true rebel leader of his people. Viva La Mouse!

Most of the story is a conversation between a cat and the mouse he's about to eat. I thought it was a little creepy to read little kids but most of the kindergartners i read it to today liked it. It does have a nice twist at the end that facilitates class discussion.

I love to read this book aloud to elementary school kids! While it might seem a little long and maybe a little morbid, especially for the youngest school-agers, the idea of possibly being someone's lunch holds their attention, from the youngest to the oldest, and keeps them engaged as (spoiler alert) the mouse outsmarts the cat. Use it as a discussion starter to introduce the food web and you might find a few budding vegetarians in your midst!

Wordy but funny dark book about a stuffy businessman cat who treats himself to a live mouse lunch at his club. Mouse talks him into some wine, letting him say grace, tricks Cat and escapes. Dark, dark illustrations.
