Author Margaret Gunning captures the intricacies of family relationships and the pettiness of family feuds, and the essence of small-town life in this wonderfully funny book. Estranged from his siblings Eileen, Dwight and Barlow, and their complicated lives, Aubrey Connar takes care of their aging mother, Min, and tries to live down his own difficult past. When Min decides to hold a family reunion for her 90th birthday, the family is thrown into an uproar that affects their own town, Harmanville, and their arch-rival, Horgansville. Then Aubrey receives a letter from the son he never knew he had and a mysterious young man with an uncanny resemblance to Jesus Christ appears and starts performing miracles -- things begin changing faster than anyone can handle. With a large cast of characters, all of whom are real characters, BETTER THAN LIFE is a fun and quick read.
