At sixty-three, Maxie McNabb is cruising down the Alaska Highway in her brand-new Winnebago. With her mini-dachshund at her side and the open road ahead, she's never been happier. But before her exploration of the Lower Forty-eight gets underway, Maxie needs to figure out who burgled her friend's Colorado home-and why. And the closer Maxie gets to solving the puzzle, the more it becomes chillingly clear that her friend's life isn't the only one on the line.

A thrilling adventure to read, especially the second half of the book keeps you on the edge. I read all of the second half sitting late, through the night, because the story was progressing fast and plot too mysterious to take a break.

However, the author goes a bit too deep in her descriptions of the natural wonders and scenaries of the Rocky Mountains and its towns, which while informative, gets in the way of the plot. Also, the plot is not really water tight and has a few loose ends that don't eventually fit together. (Not describing them as they will turn out to be spoilers).

Maxie, 63, is called from AK to the deathbed of her oldest friend, Sarah, in CO, who needs to tell her something before she dies. When she arrives, Sarah's in the hospital and can only remind her of the hiding games they played in college. The nurse makes her leave, and in the morning, Sarah's dead. The post mortem shows she was smothered. Luckily, she'd given Maxie the phone number of her lawyer before Maxie got on the road, and told her he could be trusted. Sarah had changed her will, making Maxie the executor, cutting her son out. The son shows up, furious. So does the man Maxie and Sarah knew in college, who has been dating Sarah since both were widowed--but Sarah has't told Maxie. Then a young woman who looks just like Sarah appears, claiming to be her daughter, who had just found her birth mother a few months before, and was caring for her. As Maxie stays in Sarah's driveway in her Winnebago, intruders break into Sarah's house, ransaking her room. Things get more and more complex--in fact the plot gets a bit out of hand. But Maxie, her mini-dauchsund Stretch, and her new small Winnebago, are all great, well rounded characters. Maxie's a great role model of an active, curious senior detective. I'd like to be like her, though she does get into some pickles!
