Superb. Beautiful. Funny. Nicolas Cage as Charlie and Donald Kaufman, are you kidding me!? The hair! Chris Cooper won a Supporting Actor Oscar. Meryl Streep was nominated. Cage lost to Brody in "The Pianist." (Holocaust film). Cage needs to do a Holocaust film

Having watched this movie several times over the years, what stands out for me is Nicolas Cage's relationship to himself. The dialogue about being laughed at in high school is absolutely extraordinary.

I did not like this movie. I found the plot ridiculous, and could not relate to any of the eccentric, self-absorbed characters. I read somewhere that the author of the book, "The Orchid Thief," which inspired the first part of the movie was embarrassed by it, and well she should be. The script writer took what was an interesting book, and turned it into a kind of tedious to watch satire on the process of "adapting" a book for Hollywood, and gave it an absolutely crazy, contrived ending, which didn't fit with the rest of the movie.

Muryl Strepp is in this, so I'll skip this one, thanks. She needs to retire.

Lovelorn losers are tiresome themes. And Cage's character, slowly plodding to bliss is annoyingly predictable. The collision of stories and characters may be very original, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it keeps the viewer interested or awake. The constant use of flashbacks is very annoying. By the fourth one, who cares. The first 5 minutes of the characters self-castigating prologue and the last 10 minutes of the movie is the entire movie. All the stuff in the middle is simply tedium.

Cage at his age in this movie looks uncannily like Gene Wilder.

The writing for this movie may be the most imaginative that I've ever encountered. I watched it years ago then recently read the "Orchid Thief" and then rewatched this movie. It really helps to read the book to recognize where facts and embellishment by the screen writer part paths. I can see myself watching this again. It's very mentally stimulating if you have read the book but perhaps a little confusing if you haven't.

So creative!! I love the way the stories are woven together.

Make mine meta! For all their importance, the screenwriter doesn't get much respect in Hollywood (also see: "Barton Fink"). Charlie Kaufman, who also wrote "Being John Malkovich" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," is the rare example of the screenwriter as auteur and, while this isn't his best movie, it's maybe his most representative. It gets a little too self-reflexive and meta for my tastes, collapsing in on itself like a house of cards in a house of mirrors. Cage is ok, but miscast, Cooper deservedly won an Oscar and Streep is actually acting instead of impersonating. I have no idea how Kaufman has never won best original screenplay. Directed by Spike Jonze.

If you're expecting a fairly close adaptation of the book THE ORCHID THIEF then you'll be sorely disappointed.
Not that the cinema is poor - it's fair - but just not faithful to the book at all.

I prefer watching Streep playing a cold-hearted selfish bitch to a warm-hearted tearful godness. Cage did a good job playing the double roles. It took me a half hour to get interested in the story.
