Rose Lloyd was the last to suspect that Nathan, her husband of over twenty years, was having an affair, and that he was planning to leave her. But the greatest shock was yet to come; for his mistress was Rose's colleague and friend, Minty.

So Rose was left alone in their once-happy family home, where she and Nathan had brought up their children. Then she started thinking - about the man she'd married, and how well she really knew him. About the carefree yet studious girl she had been before she met him. Twenty years ago Rose had to make the choice between two very different lives. Could she recapture what she nearly chose back then, and bring new meaning to her life now?

Mixed feelings about this book. The first half was so raw with emotion, and the second with her moving on. It was a little too close to home.

Good title and good plot. Terrible presentation. Flashback 10 years, flashback 2 years, flashback 6 weeks, etc. Constant flashbacks: here, there, everywhere. The story is getting good and suddenly, without warning you are in another time and place.

the beginning is cleverly written and interesting but then it dragged; set in Paris and London there are some interesting descriptions but i skimmed the 2nd half

The old Spanish proverb that introduces this novel-- Living well is the best revenge—is a necessary reassurance that all will be well eventually with Rose Lloyd. We come to know her personally through flashbacks to her childhood and first love affair that are interwoven with the narrative of her present life as a busy book editor and conscientious and loving wife and mother. When her husband Nathan leaves her for a younger woman who eventually takes her job as well, Rose’s anguish is heart-wrenchingly portrayed. The tables slowly turn and as Rose gains in confidence, we can almost feel sorry for Nathan as he comes to realise the value of the pattern of life that he has so unthinkingly destroyed. Women ‘of a certain age’ will appreciate the denouement of this novel—younger readers may feel that their generation is unsympathetically portrayed.

Very enjoyable audiobook about Rose, happily married for 25 years to Nathan, and then he leaves her for Rose's assistant and "friend" who also takes over her job and her house. Rose learns that living well is the best revenge. Set in London, this novel is well-written, thoughtful and often amusing.
