This is a 2002 American spy thriller directed by Phil Alden Robinson, based on Tom Clancy's novel of the same name.
It is about a plot by an Austrian Neo-Nazi to trigger a nuclear war between the United States and Russia, so that he can establish a fascist superstate in Europe.
After the Neo-Nazi's scientists build a secret nuclear weapon that destroys Baltimore and a rogue Russian officer paid off by the Neo-Nazi attacks a U.S. aircraft carrier, the world's superpowers are pushed close to the brink of all-out war.
Jack Ryan is the only person who realizes that the Baltimore bomb was a black market weapon, not a Russian one.
With the clock ticking, Ryan has to find a way to stop the impending nuclear war.
Ben Affleck's performance appears less effective as a CIA analyst than that of Harrison Ford who effortlessly filled it with authority.
Although it is a suspenseful, edge-at-your-seat thriller, it is somewhat tongue-in-cheek for an American football stadium nuked as target.
In the story the back channels are open between the CIA director and the informant in Russia.
I wonder if the back channels are still kept open in the real world.

An exciting action film and stands on its own, however it is highly watered down when compared to the book.

Poorly adapted from the book, and one of the worst treatments of any of the Clancy books.

Affleck was not a credible Jack Ryan

I found this movie remarkably tense. Because really, what could be more serious than a nuclear device on its way to US soil? The scrambling around in the fog of war to find out exactly what was happening and why and by whom at times had me holding my breath when I saw this for the first time.
And the scenes where Russian and American military hardware are shooting at each other. Oh my god. I just gasped. Not because of what was happening but because of what it means. When two superpowers come to actual blows----that will spiral out of control quickly and that's the END. The end for all of us.

Ben Affleck is less than credible as the saviour of the world.

For you to get involved here, its like sleeping with another mans wife... and what you are suggesting is that afterwards they all live together under the same roof... but what really happens is that the betrayed husband goes out and buys a gun.
