The idea of a moving earth did not begin to gain serious recognition until the work of Copernicus in the fifteenth century. Many years before the invention of the telescope, Copernicus worked with primitive scientific instruments to prove that the earth revolved around the sun. For his contributions to astronomy and physics, Copernicus is considered the founder of modern astronomy.
