The War of 1812 Diary of Susanna Merritt

Susanna Merritt is 11 years old when she hears talk of yet another war. The youngest daughter in a family of "late loyalists" living in the Niagara region of Upper Canada, Susanna knows too well the heartache war can bring. Throughout her childhood she has heard her parents' terrifying stories about the American Revolution, not to mention their English servant's tales of the Napoleonic wars. Unlike her older brother, Hamilton, Susanna has no wish to exchange the dull simplicity of life on the Merritt farm (near what is now St. Catharines, Ontario) for the excitement of a military campaign against her parents' former homeland.

The best book of the whole Dear Canada series.I loved how the author explained each detail so intensely so that us,the readers know how life was like back in the 1800's. Also I liked to listen to the parts about there food, shelter, clothes and most of all the materials they had to use instead of using the improved and innovative materials we have today.I read this book 10 times!Totally would recommend this to a friend!!!!!

Very interesting book - I couldn't put it down which is really saying something since I'm not at all a history buff! I loved how life carried on for Susanna and her family despite the events of the war going on around them. I also liked finding out the perspective of the two sides of the war of 1812.
