Raw and difficult to watch social drama on the physical and mental health wreckage of drug abuse to basically decent though misguided characters: a lonely widow and two young friends in their pursue for brighter future through drugs. Thanks to big Pharma, crooked medical professionals, regulators and our sell-outs in Congress, opioid addiction is now an epidemic and no longer mainly an inner city problem but affecting rural white communities as well (ref. Oct 15, 2017 joint report from the Washington Post and "60 Minutes".)

Best reason to why you shouldn't get addicted to drugs...Everyone gets theirs at the ending (some worse than others). This is definitely not for the faint of heart but then again it's a movie about drug addiction.

I did not enjoy the trip this movie took me on--depressing.

A tense, depressing story with good cinematography.

this film is a p.o.s. I was the only one in the theater laughing out loud in the end. Did everyone just not see the ridiculousness of it? I just don't seem to like any D.A. films.

“Requiem for a Dream,” Darren Aronofsky’s second film, starts with a mother, her son, and the two friends each having a dream for a better life. Unfortunately, the mother gets addicted to weight loss drugs, and the son and his friends get addicted to hard drugs. Aronofsky uses the latest electronic techniques to show what happens to people’s dreams when they go off the deep end with their trips to hell. If you have even 1% thought of getting hooked on either prescription drugs or cocaine or heroin, try this movie first. If you are lucky, this movie will be enough to change your mind. Ellen Burstyn was nominated for an Oscar as best actress in a not so pretty role. Aronofsky would go on to make two more universally acclaimed films, “The Wrestler” and “Black Swan.”

This film should be a required material in high schools or even middle-schools. Kids who have seen this film would never even dream of trying drugs.

Wow. Aronofsky really delivers a viscerally wrenching stab of pathos here for his second full length film. Burstyn was incredible; mind-bending realism. One of Connelly's better roles, too. The four suffering souls synthetically filing a void; poetically curling up into the fetal position. Truly an affecting social commentary on the pathetic and pitiful devolution of the human condition, and the widespread scourge of substance addiction. Lennon and McCartney said it best: "All the lonely people... Where do they all come from?" Or better yet: "Where do they all belong?" FIVE STARS.

Uneven, amateurish, but nevertheless powerful.

Violence: There is a fair bit of violence. There's blood splatter, gunfire, and a stabbing (using a fork). The typical violence you see in films isn't really used here, but this film is graphic in other ways that far outweigh conventional movie violence.

Coarse Language: The f-word is used over 30 times. Milder cusses are used also. Profanity is one of the last things you need to worry about in this film compared to the harrowing extent of the content itself.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There are many frightening and intense scenes in this film that are somewhat undefinable. IF YOU ARE SQUIRMISH AND DON'T THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT, DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM. It is excellent, but if you are easy to shock, then this film may prove a traumatic experience for you. This film is certainly not for children and most adults (male or female) would be disturbed.

Sexual Content: Sex and nudity of all kinds. It is extremely sexually graphic.

Other: Heroin and amphetamine/speed addiction is shown. Drugs play a major role in this film, acting as the agent of motivation and the central focus of this film. There's smoking and drinking alcohol, too, which barely matter in comparison to the frequency of drug depiction.
