Recorded during Wilco's Alt. Country heyday, Being There (named after the Peter Sellers film) features early Wilco band-mates: Jay Bennett, Bob Egan, Max Johnston & Ken Coomer. Over the next few years, these four band-mates would part ways with founding members Jeff Tweedy & John Stirriatt. In my mind, so went the soul. Today, Wilco is one of the most critically lauded bands in America - 70s big guitar sounds combined with Jeff Tweedy's poetic lyrics have made them stars even without a single song receiving radio play. In 1996, Wilco was more country Rolling Stones - "Far Away Eyes", "Wild Horses" than the current Television "Marquee Moon" iteration of the band. Some fans will like both versions, but most will likely appreciate one over the other. Being There is for people who like Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Graham Parsons, Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, etc.
