2nd time seen and surprised at all I missed or did not understand first viewing. I now understand the ending and her choice. It's slow, subtitles are necessary and so historically accurate. History of the era, place and people is…

With all the awards it won I should’ve guessed that it would be lousy.

I don't know why, but I really like the B&W and the narrow field that was used to shoot this film. It somehow made the story both more intimate and claustrophobic.

one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite movie making countries. didn't think anyone still made films this way. it works very much like a book, in the sense that there is minimal dialogue & not everything is explained to you. …

How deeply do people ponder the decision some make to, for example, take vows as a nun? We might equally wonder why some would commit to serve any ideology. It is the work of this drama to answer this question as it pertains to the two…

I wish there were more of this director's films in the catalog. It is a well crafted film. The B&W format is ideally suited.

This film did not go where I expected, and for that it should be lauded. But I have to admit, I was not much moved where it did go. Cinematically well done, but lacks drama and characterization of the main protagonists.

Beautiful film from this immensely talented director. Exquisite camera work and scenery. The script is spare and economical, this story is told with few words carefully chosen. Yet the characters come through powerfully. Highly recommended…

Ugly an Boring - too bad because it’s an interesting Subject. Sex at end with cigarette - she could do better. But hey he’s a Jazz Musican.

After seeing Cold War in the theater, several friends mentioned that they enjoyed Ida more. I was happy to see it available through booth Hoopla and Kanopy. The story and characters are more developed. The cinematography is as stunning as…

First of all anyone concerned about lack of spoiler alerts should stay away from these comments prior to watching a movie. If the viewer is curious regards the contents of movies such as "Ida" then there are many sites dedicated to giving…

Like the director of the movie, I also left Poland at the age of 14. I was eager to watch it with my family, but I am glad that only my American-born husband and I wasted our time doing so. We found the movie boring, shallow,…

One of the most beautifully shot films I've seen in a very long time.

Wonderful, hauntingly beautiful movie. For those of us familiar with history of Poland and her people the story line captured the stoic and yet hopeful heart. The grey/white of film as well as numerous silent moments gives viewers time to…

Yes, yes, yes, it's slow. It's also beautifully made and a bit haunting.

Extraordinary Academy Award-winning Polish film about the force of history and why individual reckoning matters. Eerie, beautiful, haunting, and made somehow more potent through its silences and grey colour palette.

Filmed in soft shades of white and grey in the intimate 1.37:1 Academy ratio, writer/director Pawel Pawlikowski adapts a tragic chapter from his own family history to produce a story wherein one woman’s shaken faith comes to represent the…

Let me add my recommendation to an already long list of favorable reviews and awards for the film "Ida". A really absorbing film on two sisters search for what happened to their parents during World War II. The film is beautifully shot…

Haven't seen the movie, yet...But would have appreciated if some of the haters had started their critique with 'spoiler alert' at the beginning of their comments.

Fantastic black and white cinematography. You really got a sense of the bleakness of Communist Poland. The acting was superb if you can get into the story. Other reviewers have said there is not much of a family secret - don't believe…

I was a bit unsure of borrowing this movie due to the recent very negative comments. Upon watching it though, both my wife and I quite enjoyed it and would give it a 4.5. Tastes are quite subjective, but it is hard to agree with previous…

This is a movie with substance and heart. Of course it's slow. (That may even be the point.) Moving, real, and beautiful.

This is a 2013 drama directed by Paweł Pawlikowski. Although it is supposed to be a tale of moral and spiritual awakening of a young novitiate, her dark family secret is NOT dark enough. And Ida's awakenig seems depicted quite shallowly…
